RECORD TIME (detail)

RELIQUARY mixed media 27" x 16"

BACKSTORY

In the mid 1990s I made two autobiographical artworks, and as it turned out, both of these were perfect preparation for writing A FREEWHEELIN TIME some ten years later. They were excellent resources and I used them as full color notes and outline.

One piece is called RELIQUARY: Things I Carry. A reliquary is a container where relics are kept for contemplation. I made my reliquary in the form of a necklace and it contains the story of my life which I am destined to carry.

The other, RECORD TIME, is a visual memoir concerning events before and after the release in 1963 of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" album with both of us on the cover. It's about the music, the marches, and coming of age, and how those elements, fused together, created a politically active generation.

I think of these three things, the two artworks and the written book, as a triptych.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I think of my art works as reliquaries—repositories—for the ideas, obsessions, personal stories, and philosophy of life, that I have acquired over time.
